Beanopini: A Captivating and Nutritious Snack Food Packaging Design

Bringing the Lupini Bean to the Forefront of Healthy Snacking

In branding and packaging this start-up snack food business, Angela Spindler, Creative Director, and her team saw an opportunity to educate and captivate consumers about the superfood lupini bean. With a vibrant and energetic color palette, illustrations depicting the flavors, and a bold simplicity in design, Beanopini stands out in the crowded and often confusing snack food category.

Beanopini's packaging design is a testament to its uniqueness and originality. The use of illustrations over photography adds a touch of craft and traditionalism, perfectly reflecting the values of the brand. The organic shape of the bean serves as a leading graphic device, giving the packaging a bold simplicity that demands attention on the shelf.

What sets Beanopini apart is its clear information hierarchy and engaging language. The design effectively communicates the brand's values and personality while highlighting the nutritional benefits of the lupini bean. This approach not only educates consumers but also captivates them, making Beanopini a moreish and irresistible snack.

Technologically, the outer zip lock stand-up pouches are gravure printed on white pigmented polyethylene. The use of CMYK and two spot colors per pack, along with a matte film finish, ensures consistency and quality. The inner packs, vacuum-sealed for freshness, are also printed on white pigmented polyethylene with two spot colors per pack.

Beanopini comes in two sizes: the 100g inner packs measuring 145mm wide by 160mm high, and the 38g inner packs measuring 105mm wide by 130mm high. The outer packs, which house the inner packs, are 170mm wide by 210mm high.

The design team, led by Angela Spindler and illustrator Jo Tronc, faced challenges in maintaining consistency across all packs while honoring the colors of the illustrations. However, their expertise and creativity prevailed, resulting in a visually stunning and cohesive packaging design.

Beanopini's packaging design not only showcases the health benefits of the lupini bean but also reflects the current trend of transparency in content. The design is honest, clear, and straightforward, allowing consumers to see exactly what they are getting.

The project, which started in July 2016, was completed in March 2017. The duration allowed for thorough research on the nutritional benefits of the lupini bean and the development of a design that effectively communicates these benefits.

Beanopini's outstanding packaging design has been recognized with an Iron A' Design Award in the Packaging Design category. This prestigious award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The design's integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics contributes to a better world.

With its captivating design and nutritious qualities, Beanopini is set to revolutionize the snacking industry. It's a snack that not only tastes good but also makes you feel good about what you're eating.
